The Foxtail Palm is known and loved for its stately gray trunk with big tufted fronds that conjure up the image of fox’s bushy tail. Foxtails are fast growers, and can reach a height of 30 ft. After it flowers, the tree puts forth clusters of colorful red fruits. Some gardeners cluster Foxtails in groups of three to create a true tropical oasis.
Plant your Foxtail in a spot that will receive at least six hours of direct sun per day. The Foxtail is moderately salt tolerant, and does well in coastal areas. They appreciate well-drained sandy soil. Once established, the tree is drought tolerant, though regular watering is recommended. Foxtails need feeding in spring, summer and autumn with a granular palm fertilizer containing micro-nutrients. Occasionally, adding manganese or magnesium keeps the fronds looking their best.
